I was successfully installed Maya 2012 (student license) on Fedora, it wasnt really complicated actually to install it but the licensing sometimes confusing me.i've tried it on Ubuntu too but i got trouble when i activating the license (Haven't read the FAQ completely though lol ,).
The interesting thing here is,the student license for autodesk product (please read the FAQ + limitations).
THe foundry nuke ,and renderman compliant such as 3delight has done the same before (sadly the output watermarked ),have no further words to write but its very great idea to use PLE instead of using piracy software.
in the future i want to use linux +maya+blender (more importanly everything's in legal way ) yeaa goodbye piracy! ( although i got alot of piracy softwr in my windus hahahaha...)
